dvr remoteIt leaps commercials in a single bound!  It has the strength to squeeze an hour of programming into 45 minutes!  It is the handsome hero for we middle income woman, 18-49 who spend 26 hours a week recording our favorite shows.

Broadcast television is taking its beating yet still has influence. It still reaches 92% of US households.  But how is the new digital age going to force broadcast TV to evolve?  What about the transition from analog to digital?  The advertising campaigns were many and the government spent millions of dollars and countless hours educating the tv watcher to prepare!  It has had a major effect on those who have dug their heels into the ground.  “Over the past four months, the number of U.S. households completely unprepared for the DTV transition has declined by 50%” (MediaPost Publications)  Good news, right?

What about the fragmentation of cable?  Especially now that most have switched to it or satellite.  All those channels…all those shows.  Is your message even being seen and by how many?  Then there’s the newest growing phenomenon, Internet TV viewing.  Media Research reported that downloading television programs had the highest  increase for Internet action in 2008.  It rose 141% from fall 2007 to fall 2008.  Apple iTunes, YouTube and Atomfilms.  My daughter is commonly seen with the laptop resting on her lap watching  The Big Bang Theory downloaded from CBS.  We also love visiting Simons Cat on YouTube.  (If you have a cat, this is a must see!)  Even the beloved news is being effected.  Kevin Mirek, TV executive elite/RBR wrote:

“Network news anchors used to say, ‘Stay tuned for your local news;’ now they tell viewers at the end of their newscast to stop watching TV and go to a computer for more network news.  “Go to our website!”.  Why should one tune into Family Guy when one can view the funnest clips on YouTube?  TV executives have been duped into believing these clips somehow promote their program.  If that were a good thing, why are TV stations failing by the hundreds?

Then there’s DVR.  Commercial Avoidance!  At least 22% of households have some type of DVR in their homes.  Heard of “The Strobe Logo“?  It’s the impression one gets from fast forwarding a commercial and being exposed to a logo for 6 seconds.  If I’ve seen your logo before I’ll know it, but what about the message?  But if you’re a new business…would I know your logo?

I haven’t even touched on the white elephant in the room…the misdirection in how to buy broadcast television!!  I’ve seen far to many client to count who are sold a bill of goods on “rotators”  and “fringe”.

So, what happens to our old friend broadcast television?  How do you watch?  Me, I’m heading home to download Gilmore Girls, watch the recent episode of The Young and Restless and catch Deadliest Catch and all in under 2 1/2 hours!!  DVR…my hero!

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.
